STUDIO ART

SY 2008/09

This course is for students who have completed and excelled in all other Art courses offered by PAHS, and who wish to further explore some aspect of Art on a semi-independent basis. Students are approved for one semester of Studio Art at a time. Approval by the instructor is based on demonstrated skill, work ethic, behavior, and enthusiasm for the creative process. At the start of each grading period, the student will meet with the instructor to discuss individual objectives and projects. The instructor will serve as a technical and material resource for the studio artist. Studio artists are expected to model appropriate behavior and discipline for other Art students. Students will be assigned a drawer in which to keep their materials. The text for this course is Design Synectics by Nicholas Roukes.

GRADING: Quarterly grades are based largely on the attainment of pre-determined student objectives as demonstrated by student’s personal projects and maintaining a sketchbook. The sketchbook will be supplied by the instructor, and should contain at least nine (9) drawings that appear to have taken at least 1 hour to complete outside of class. Students should not be working on sketchbooks during class. At the end of each grading period, the student prepares a “Studio Show” in which all their work from the previous nine weeks is gathered for display. The studio show should reflect nine weeks of diligent work by a skilled artist. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that their work is gathered and displayed by the end of the last class of the grading period (see also “Daily Participation Grades” below). In addition to the mid-quarter progress report, sponsors will be notified if the student’s grade appears in danger of falling below a “C”.

DAILY PARTICIPATION GRADES: Students are expected to be participating (in Art) for each, entire class period. Each student has the opportunity to earn 50 participation points every time they come to class. If a student fails to begin working within 10 minutes of the beginning of class, they will receive 0 points for that day. Similarly, students who cease work more than 10 minutes before the end of class will receive 0 points for that day. If a student feels that he/she has completed all assignments, the student must still participate in Art in some constructive form.

Bottom line? PARTICIPATE!!!!!!!

CLEAN UP: Students are expected to leave their work areas clean and dry for the next class. Water bowls, tools, and brushes must also be cleaned and neatly put away before leaving. When finished or at the end of class, wet paintings or clay sculptures must be placed on the drying rack or in the drying cabinet (respectively), but must be removed and stored at the beginning of the student’s next class to make room for more.

ARTISTIC CONTENT: Artwork containing profanity, graphic violence, drug/alcohol promotion, hate themes, or explicit nudity will not be accepted. Students are encouraged to ask before beginning a project that may fall into one (or more) of the areas listed above.

LANGUAGE: Profanity and/or language with vulgar content is unacceptable in the Art room. In a class period, a student may receive one (1) warning if he/she is in violation. Further violation will result first in an after school detention, then in a discipline referral to the administration.

CELL PHONES: Students are permitted to possess cell phones, but are not to use them during school. Furthermore, cell phones should not be out at any time in the Art room. Cell phones that are out will be confiscated and turned in to the administration. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that cell phones are turned OFF when entering the Art room. If a student’s cell phone sounds during class, they are to turn it off immediately without answering it. If a student’s cell phone sounds more than once during a semester, the student will be referred to the administration.

CAMERAS: Unless given specific permission, students may not take photographs or have cameras out in the Art room. Cameras that are out without permission will be confiscated and turned in to the administration.

LEAVING EARLY: Students will be released from class at the scheduled bell, no earlier! If a student leaves the Art room before the bell has rung, even if they’re standing outside the doorway, they will be assigned an after school detention on the first infraction. Any further violations will be result in a discipline referral to the administration.
