COURSE TITLE JOURNALISM
GRADE LEVEL 10-12

MAJOR CONCEPTS/CONTENT : Journalism offers practical experience with interviewing, writing, and critique skills, using local events as material, students research and write news and sports stories, feature articles, editorials, and reviews. As they prepare their articles for publication, reporters learn to edit their copy for mechanics, style, and effectiveness. In addition, the class examines ethical issues that affect school and national news reporting. Students are evaluated on quality of written assignments, meeting deadlines, and mastery of skills and concepts.

COURSE TITLE SPEECH
GRADE LEVEL 9-12

MAJOR CONCEPTS/CONTENT : This course is designed to prepare students to create speeches that reflect careful thought in planning, organization, and delivery. The content includes, but is not limited to, identifying the purpose and audience for the speech; selecting the general topic and refining to a specific topic; making a statement of the thesis; selecting appropriate resources and information; outlining; creating a bibliography; selecting main points and supporting information; preparing the appropriate visual aids; and modifying information for a particular audience. The course also might include writing introductions and conclusions; using appropriate delivery techniques; evaluating delivery, content, and pattern of organization using specific guidelines; delivering oral or written critiques; and evaluating a speech according to established criteria.

COURSE TITLE ENTRANCE TO ENGLISH
GRADE LEVEL 9-12

MAJOR CONCEPTS/CONTENT : This course is designed to prepare students for the different activities that they are expected to perform in English classes and to identify the basic terms that student need to know. The specific content develops listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills, and writing skills.
