World History 10 – Connections to Today

Classroom Management Policy

& Course Requirements

A proper learning atmosphere is crucial to your success in this class. This is the reason I am providing you this list of expectations and policies.

I.       Materials for Class

1.  A 3-ring binder or folder to be used only for this class. It will be    used for organizing all of the work in this class. It will be graded at least 2 times in the quarter.

2.  One section for Assignments

3.  One section for Notes

4.  One section for Homework

5.  One section for Classwork

6.  One section for Journals

7.  One section for current events

8.  One section for Quizzes

9.  Loose-leaf notebook paper for all classwork and homework. I will not accept paper torn from a spiral notebook.

10.  All work must be done in blue or black ink, with the exception of maps. No pencil work will be accepted for written assignments. Major papers are to be typed or written in blue or black ink on one side of the paper.

11.  You are to bring your book and your binder to class every day. All textbooks are to be covered.

12.  Current Events:  A current event must be turned in to me by Thursday or Friday of each week (the last time you meet this class each week). You are to write a summary of the newspaper clipping, Internet news article (CNN), television or radio news. You are to follow the proper format. Be sure to write the article and put the source and date at the bottom of the page. You are to attach the article to the back of the summary. If the article came from the radio, television, or the Internet, you should write the source and the date on your paper. You are to respond to the following questions: What is the article about? Who are the people named in the article and what are their titles or roles? Why did you choose the article? How is it significant? Do not choose something that you cannot respond to the questions.

13. Journals:  At the beginning of every class period, I give a journal question to activate your knowledge. The journal questions are done in the class. If you should not finish, you will need to answer the questions for homework. You will be given 7 minutes to write your responses. Usually the questions are short answers. They should not take more than ¼ of a page.

14. Assignment Page:  After your title page you should insert your assignment sheet. I provide these for you. If you are absent, check with a friend or use the master log in the class.

II.      General Classwork Formal Requirements

          1.  All work submitted should be on 8 ½ x 11-inch paper.

          2.  All written work should be done in blue or black ink.

          3.  Maps should be colored and labeled.

4.  All papers need a proper heading. The heading is your name, your period and the date. It should be in the top right side of your paper before the margin line.

5.  Do not write in the margins or on the bottom of the paper.

III.    Class Conduct and Procedures

          1. The scheduled starting time for your class has been posted. You should be in your seat no later than that time.

2.  The student handbook and general school policy will be followed for excused and unexcused absences and tardies. It is your responsibility to follow correct procedures. See me for explanations of this policy if you have questions.

IV.     Class Conduct and Procedures

1.  All work must be handed in at the beginning of class on the due date. No late papers will be accepted without a proper excuse.

2.  You are responsible for assignments missed due to absences. Make-up tests will be scheduled within two days of your return from an absence, or they will be counted as zeros. Make-up work for excused absences will be turned in no later than three days after the student’s return to school. Exceptions will be on a case-by-case basis. (Hint: Know the telephone number of someone in your class so that you may call for information about any assignments missed). In addition, a log kept in the classroom will be available for students to use to find the content of any missed assignments.

3.  No gum chewing in my room at any time!

4.  No food or drinks will be allowed in the classroom. I will allow bottles of water to be brought into the room. I have a water fountain in the room for student use.

5.  I will dismiss you from class. When it is time to leave, remain in your seats until I dismiss you.

6.  Students are expected to behave in class. Talking back or refusing to follow directions will result in a call to parents, detention, and/or referral to the principal’s office. Respect gives a sense of dignity and worth to the classroom.

V.      Grading Procedures

1.  Your grades are computed according to the number of activities in class. It is important that you know that homework and writing assignments count the heaviest. Not turning in these assignments can amount to as much as 50% of your grade!

2.  Grades will be calculated on a “possible points” basis. This will be done as follows:

          (a)  Notes will have a minimum value of 5 points.

          (b)  Current events will have a maximum value of 10 points.

          (c)  Quizzes will have a maximum value of 20 points.

          (d)  Projects and reports will be assigned a maximum value of 50 or 100 points, depending on the time involved.

          (e)  Major tests will have a maximum value of 100 points.

          (f)  Notebook reviews will have a maximum value of 100 points

          (g)  Journals will have a maximum value of 10 points.

At the end of each quarter, the total points a student has earned in all areas will be divided by the maximum possible points that could have been earned. The result is the student’s average.

          3.  Folders will be checked twice: One time will be announced and another will be a random check.

          4.  You may request a grade check at any time.

5.  How to improve your grades: Any student who completes daily assignments on a regular basis may come to me for extra credit work. Avid readers may read selected works for pleasure to earn extra credit, and some student may choose to use their special talents in ways to benefit their classmates and themselves.

VI.     Communication

          1.  Please come to me if you are having trouble with an assignment. I care about you and your education.

2.  Please sign and tear off the bottom part of this paper and return it to me. Please include your email addresses. Thank you…I look forward to teaching you this year.
